History

BARDOU and the sourrounding area have been settled since prehestoric times. The Romans were here for over five hundred years. The name "Bardou" is of Visigothic origin. The Visigoths settled in Southern France in the fifth century, however nothing remains of the period in our mountian hamlet.

The houses you see here date from the end of the 16th century. Many written documents going back to that time exist. Between the 15th and the end of the 19th century the number of families living in Bardou varied between 15 and 19 - with a maximum of 90 person.

Starting in 1870, the population diminished. By 1965 there was only one 75 year old man left, and most of the village had fallen into ruin. In 1967 we bought these ruins and have lived here and in the meantime, rebuilt mose of the houses.

In these restorated stone houses we lodge our guests.
